Join us for our first ABIChat luncheon of 2020 sponsored by Holland Hearing Center! The theme of ABIChat for 2020 will be "from good to great." Through this series, we'll explore and learn about how different community leaders took their leadership abilities and community projects from good to great!
First up for our series is Jane Varner Beard with the Dian Graves Owen Foundation. A native of Wichita, Kansas, Jane is a graduate of Abilene Christian University and the University of Texas Law School. Prior to her decision to be home full-time with her children, she was a partner in the McMahon Law Firm in Abilene working primarily in the field of corporate law with an emphasis in the areas of health care and non-profit organizations. While practicing law, Jane was named the Outstanding Young Lawyer of Texas by the 40,000 member Texas Young Lawyer Association.
After a twelve-year hiatus, Jane became the Grants Administrator for the Dian Graves Owen Foundation in 2002. As the Grants Administrator, she is responsible for assisting in the selection and the administration of approximately $14,000,000 in new grants annually together with the supervision of the existing grant portfolio. Jane is also the President of Abilene Heritage Square, a nonprofit dedicated to the renovation and repurposing of the former Lincoln Middle School campus.
Before her job as a grants administrator limited service on civic boards, Jane was a founding Trustee of the Abilene Community Foundation, and was a Board member of a number of local institutions including ACU, Hendrick Medical Foundation, Christian Homes of Abilene, West Central Texas Municipal Water District and the Development Corporation of Abilene.
Jane is married to fellow attorney Rusty Beard and they are the parents of two grown sons, Sterling a political writer in Washington, DC and Hudson a first-year medical resident in West Virginia.
